Our latest oyster shucker collaboration with Join or Die Knives, exclusive to Grid Supply Co., is made from a 150-year-old black cherry tree in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. The tree was salvaged by Dylan Greenquist of Genuine Timbercraft after disease and time finally took its toll on the beautiful native species. The center of the tree had rotted away, so the age is based on the tree's diameter and growth factor formula which was established by the International Society of Arboriculture. This tree would have first sprouted in the mid 1800s, which places its germination sometime around the Cemetery's establishment in 1848 and the end of the Civil War in 1865. This unique cherrywood has been carefully milled, cured and slabbed before undergoing a stabilization process whereby an epoxy resin is infused throughout the grain using a vacuum and heat curing system. The process creates dimensional stability, durability and water resistance throughout the piece.
To ensure our oyster knives perform just right, Grid Supply Co. has tested its unique design with some of the best shuckers in Virginia for feedback. You may have even spotted some of our special collaborations in Garden & Gun magazine!
